Between Safety and Profit in the haulage sector

Image
Road safety is a serious global issue. According to the United Nation’s global status report on road safety conducted in 2008, over 1.2 million people die each year on the world’s roads, and between 20 and 50 million suffer non-fatal injuries. In most regions of the world this epidemic of road traffic injuries is still increasing. Over 90% of the world’s fatalities on the roads occur in low-income and middle-income countries, which have only 48% of the world’s vehicles.   The haulage sector in Nigeria and indeed every part of the world is characterized by truck owners and investors who invested a lot of money to get their business running and would do anything to ensure they get back their investment and profit in the shortest possible time. It then begs the question, at what point do stakeholders in the trucking industry choose between safety and profit? The haulage world’s success is measured in terms of capacities, mileages, rates, revenue gener...

Automating the Haulage Industry a way forward in Nigeria

Image
The haulage industry in Nigeria is gradually transforming into what I termed an emerging “ hybrid ” se c tor, thanks to a new crop of brilliant minds who have tapped into the power of technology in order to make haulage/logistics processes seamless within our geographical landscape. Such minds are kobo360 , fleettribe, truckademy, OnePort365 etc etc who are re-defining the haulage space in Nigeria through creating applications and online platforms for users to get task done at the comfort of their homes without the stress of traveling long distance. Interestingly, the Covid19 has created a paradigm shift in this space hence served as a catalyst for customers to engage with these brilliant innovation.   For instance,  Fleettribe is an innovation driven company deploying focused solutions towards improved productivity in the African Haulage Industry by providing Just-In-Time recovery services to companies in need of it. They offer services such as:  Truck...

PRICE CONTROL AND THE HAULAGE INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

Image
No economy can survives without a seamless transportation of goods and services. It is also true that when the cost of transportation goes up then the cost of goods and services also goes up. It is therefore safe to say that transportation has a direct relationship to the cost of goods and services. In Nigeria, when the cost of transportation goes up (mostly due to fuel scarcity) it is certain that the cost of goods and services will also go up. Ironically, if the price of fuel comes down the cost of transportation reluctantly comes down hence the price of goods remains unchanged. This is not only peculiar to the haulage sector alone but to all other sector of the Nigerian economy.  We all know that transportation is the “engine” of any economy. It makes up over 80% of what drives an any economy, and the haulage industry takes a huge share of that mobility activities as far as Nigeria is concerned.  It is therefore very important that there must ...

PRICE SHOULD BE CHARGED PER KILOMETER IN NIGERIA’S TRUCK INDUSTRY

Image
Charging for the movement of goods within the haluage industry especially in Nigeria is a very dicey financial matrix. It varies from one operator to another and from one company to the other. For instance some companies calculate their cost of transportation by “ per tonnage ” while others pay by the “ trucks’ body size carrying-capacity ”, others simply by “ discretion ” based on experience and common practice with the industry. Be it by tonnage rate, carrying-capacity indices, or by discretion, I am of the opinion that these indicators cannot all be right model to arrive at the most rational cost for transporting goods from one place to another in the haulage industry. The question to ask is what are the factors considered in arriving at the price? If the factors considered were to be right then the prices will be universal for the same trucks with the same carrying capacity, consuming same fuel volume, plying the same route “ irrespective of the nature...
